What is companion care?

Companion care is non-medical support focused on socialization, light supervision, and assistance with daily tasks, distinct from personal or nursing care.

Companion care fills a gap between independence and personal care. It provides non-medical support designed to improve quality of life, reduce isolation, and help clients manage daily routines without the clinical oversight of nursing or personal care workers.

A companion caregiver may spend time with clients through conversation and activities, supervise medication reminders (without administering care), assist with light household tasks, run errands like grocery shopping or appointments, provide transportation, or help with meal preparation. The work is relational and practical rather than physical or clinical.

Companion care matters because many seniors and adults living in London, Ontario want to stay in their homes but need support that stops short of personal care assistance. Isolation and loneliness carry real health risks, and companionship paired with practical help with errands and light tasks can sustain independence longer. It is also often more affordable than personal or nursing care since no medical training is required.

This type of support is distinct from personal care (bathing, dressing, toileting) and nursing care (wound care, medication administration, catheter management). When to start, and what volume of hours, depends on individual needs. Many aged care providers in the area offer companion care alongside other home support services. You can browse home care services to find options suited to your situation.
