What is a Personal Support Worker (PSW)?

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) is an Ontario-certified health care aide who provides direct personal care, hygiene, and mobility assistance to seniors and persons with disabilities, working under the direction of nurses or care plans but without prescribing medications or performing medical procedures.

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) holds a specific Ontario certification and works as a frontline caregiver in seniors' homes, long-term care facilities, and assisted living settings. PSWs assist with activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility, and meal support. They also help with light housekeeping, laundry, and companionship tasks that support a senior's quality of life and independence.

Training for PSWs in Ontario typically requires completion of a provincially recognized program through a college or training provider, often a one-year diploma course covering anatomy, patient hygiene, infection control, communication, and ethical care. Unlike Registered Nurses (RNs) or Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), PSWs do not administer medications, perform medical assessments, or carry out clinical procedures. They work under the direction of nurses or supervisors and report changes in a client's health or behaviour.

The PSW role is distinct but complementary to nursing roles in senior care. While nurses manage medical treatments and complex care plans, PSWs provide the consistent daily support that enables seniors to remain safe and comfortable. Many seniors rely on PSWs for several hours each week or daily, making the quality and reliability of this workforce critical to community-based aging in London and throughout Ontario. Finding trained, trustworthy PSWs is a core concern for families and care coordinators; many agencies connect seniors with qualified PSWs through vetted home care services providers.
